Wheelchairs and Mobility Devices

Personal mobility devices have become increasingly diverse in size, design and functionality. It is important that these devices meet certain design standards for you to travel safely on Sun Van.

U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations 49 CFR Parts 27, 37 and 38 specify the development and maintenance of accessibility requirements for "common wheelchair" measurements, and how these requirements are applied to transit vehicles. To travel on Sun Van, you must comply with these regulations.

A "common wheelchair," as defined by the U.S. Department of Transportation Regulation is:

  • A three- or four-wheeled device that van be used indoors and is designed for and used by a person with mobility issues.
  • 30 inches wide, wheel rim to wheel rim.
  • 48 inches long when measured two inches off the ground from the widest part of the wheel to the footrest.
  • No more than 600 pounds when occupied.
