Your journey to becoming a Sun Tran operator starts here. Below is a roadmap that guides you through each step of the training process after being hired.

We encourage you to start reviewing these materials before Week 1 of training so you can feel confident, prepared, and one step ahead as you begin the CDL permit process. System Familiarization
Route training is a key part of becoming a Sun Tran operator. Reviewing the Sun Tran system map before training begins can help you get familiar with major streets, route corridors, and transit centers across Tucson—giving you a great head start before you hit the road.

Pay
All new hires begin earning pay on Day One of employment, including during the training period.
Training: $17.41/ hour
After training: $18.52/ hour
Top rate: $27.64/ hour (increases every contract year)
Training Schedule
Class room training through Behind-the-Wheel training will be conducted Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.. New hires are expected to be available for the full duration of each scheduled training day. Your schedule will vary once you begin Route training.
Attendance & Punctuality
Consistent attendance and punctuality are critical to successfully completing the training program. While perfect attendance is strongly expected. Arriving on time and attending all scheduled trainings will help ensure you progress and success throughout the program.

Behind-the-Wheel Trainers
Our Behind-the-Wheel trainers are experienced Sun Tran operators who volunteer their time to help new hires become road-ready Coach Operators. As you begin your first days behind the wheel, they’ll be there to guide you every step of the way, answering questions, sharing their experience, and supporting your growth throughout the training program.
